Transparency International, in conjunction with the Partnership for Central America (PCA), has launched an innovative endeavor known as the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Initiative for Central America (ACT Project). This pioneering project aims to enhance corporate honesty and foster a more inviting environment for investments across the area.
The unveiling event served as a venue for an in-depth discussion on the project’s goals. By uniting influential stakeholders and industry specialists, it holds the promise of transforming the regional business environment and fostering enduring growth through transparent operations and collaborative efforts.
In the upcoming article, explore details about this innovative initiative and the benefits it brings to investors within the region.
Key Stakeholders and Partners: Fostering Trust via Transparency
During the launch event, PCA gathered partners like AgroAmérica, Grupo AG, Grupo Ficohsa, and Grupo Mariposa, alongside Transparency International and its regional branches such as Acción Ciudadana, Asociación para una Sociedad Más Justa (ASJ), and Fundación Nacional para el Desarrollo (FUNDE). The dialogue focused on the essential contribution of the ACT Project in maintaining the rule of law and endorsing transparent business operations.
Partners reiterated their commitment to enhancing transparency, combating corruption, safeguarding workers’ rights, and creating an investment-friendly environment. The dialogue also highlighted the initiative’s goals and stressed the importance of encouraging more companies to willingly embrace accountability standards and ethical business practices.
Key leaders’ statements supporting the initiative
Brian Nichols on the ACT Initiative
Brian Nichols, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, emphasized the significance of the initiative:
“Good governance is a cornerstone of our private sector involvement with the Central America Forward initiative. The ACT program establishes a fresh benchmark for company practices, advocating the rule of law and fostering sustainable economic development. We are honored to partner with PCA and applaud these efforts.”
Luciana Torchiaro’s Views on Ethical Practices and Investment
Luciana Torchiaro, Regional Advisor for Latin America and the Caribbean at Transparency International, highlighted the project’s commitment to ethical practices:
“The ACT Project moves beyond just meeting compliance standards, as companies commit to transparency and integrity. This initiative, backed by voluntary partners, aims to reduce corruption risks and create a reliable business atmosphere that appeals to global investors. We are confident that a transparent corporate environment will drive economic growth, enhance human capital, and support the development of sustainable societies in Central America.”
Mario Bustillo of Grupo Ficohsa Expresses Support
Mario Bustillo, Vice President of Institutional Relations at Grupo Ficohsa, expressed his support as well:
“This initiative is crucial for Central America, and we are proud to back it. Transparency and ethical conduct foster trust, lure investments, generate employment, and fortify institutions. At Grupo Ficohsa, integrity and transparency have consistently been our top priorities. With more companies embracing these principles, we can achieve significant progress in combating corruption.”
Supporting the Central America Forward Initiative
The ACT Project builds on Vice President Kamala Harris’s Central America Forward (CAF) initiative, launched in February 2023, which introduced the Good Governance, Good Jobs Declaration. This declaration reaffirmed the ongoing commitment of the U.S. government and PCA to tackle corruption and safeguard labor rights in the region.
The ACT Project builds upon the efforts of PCA member companies that, in June 2023, committed to the PCA Corporate Pledge on the Rule of Law. This initiative aims to collectively advance transparency and accountability throughout Central America.
Assistance and Best Practices Provided by the ACT Project
By improving their own and their value chains’ capacity to embrace and execute transparent business practices, the ACT Project assists participating companies.
By providing best practices and technical support, the project assists businesses in refining their ethical and compliance procedures to align with international standards across various domains. Companies involved can better handle fraud and corruption risks and strengthen their compliance structures by integrating these standards into their operations.
