The indicative top 10 companies with outstanding revenue per employee in 2024

Commodity traders lead a practical roster of businesses boasting remarkably massive revenue per employee. Enormous volumes of oil, gas, metals, and various other commodities are handled by relatively compact trading units. Fuel distributors, refiners, and pharmaceutical wholesalers also secure top positions since the financial worth of their traded merchandise remains substantial compared to their workforce size.

There is, however, no authoritative worldwide top 10. Private companies do not disclose headcounts consistently, financial years differ, and a company may report group-wide sales while citing a workforce figure that does not cover every subsidiary. The ranking below is an indicative comparison, using approximately 2024 revenue or turnover and reported or publicly described employee counts. Rounded figures should not be read as a precise league table.

The projected top 10

  • 1. Vitol — approximately $180 million per employee. The privately held energy trader reported roughly $331 billion in 2024 turnover. Dividing that by a commonly cited workforce of around 1,800 produces an exceptional figure. The comparison is sensitive to which affiliated operations are included in the employee count.
  • 2. Gunvor — approximately $65 million to $70 million per employee. With roughly $136 billion in 2024 turnover and around 2,000 employees, the energy trader illustrates how a relatively small organization can handle very large transaction volumes.
  • 3. Trafigura — approximately $18 million to $20 million per employee. Its fiscal 2024 revenue was about $243 billion. Against a workforce of roughly 12,000 to 13,000, that implies revenue per employee near $19 million. Trafigura has a broader physical logistics footprint than a purely office-based trader.
  • 4. Valero Energy — approximately $13 million per employee. Revenue of roughly $130 billion and a workforce near 10,000 put the refiner high on this measure. Petroleum product prices strongly affect its revenue.
  • 5. Plains All American Pipeline — approximately $11 million to $12 million per employee. Roughly $50 billion in revenue spread across about 4,000 to 4,500 employees yields a high ratio. Its business includes moving and marketing energy products.
  • 6. Phillips 66 — approximately $11 million per employee. About $145 billion in revenue and roughly 13,000 employees produce a ratio near $11 million. Refining, marketing, and midstream activities all contribute to its sales.
  • 7. PBF Energy — approximately $8 million to $9 million per employee. Revenue in the low-$30-billion range and a workforce of roughly 4,000 place the refiner among the leaders, although its ratio can move substantially with fuel prices.
  • 8. World Kinect — approximately $8 million per employee. The fuel and energy distributor generates sales in the tens of billions of dollars with a workforce of around 5,000. High sales volume and relatively thin margins are central to understanding its position.
  • 9. Marathon Petroleum — approximately $7 million to $8 million per employee. Revenue of roughly $140 billion and around 18,000 to 19,000 employees produce a ratio in this range. The exact result depends on the reporting date and employee definition used.
  • 10. Cencora — approximately $6 million to $7 million per employee. The pharmaceutical distributor reported roughly $294 billion in fiscal 2024 revenue. With about 46,000 employees, its ratio was around $6.4 million.

The middle positions are particularly close. Different reporting dates, workforce definitions, or treatment of subsidiaries could change their order. Other companies—including McKesson and additional energy merchants—can enter a similar shortlist under different comparison rules.

How revenue per employee is calculated

The math is straightforward: annual revenue divided by employee count. Should an enterprise sell $50 billion worth of merchandise and list 5,000 workers, its revenue per employee stands at $10 million.

Making that calculation comparable is harder. Annual revenue is a flow measured over a year, while a reported headcount is often a snapshot on one date. A year-end workforce may not represent the people employed throughout the year. Contractors, joint ventures, acquired businesses, and subsidiaries can further complicate the denominator.

To achieve the most robust comparison, employ revenue data and average full-time-equivalent employees covering identical reporting periods and corresponding organizational tiers. Such metrics are not uniformly accessible across every enterprise featured on a global roster.

Why traders and distributors rank so highly

A trader that buys a large shipment of oil and resells it records substantial sales revenue, even if its profit on the shipment is a small fraction of that amount. A pharmaceutical wholesaler faces a similar effect when expensive medicines pass through its distribution network. Refiners also sell high-value products at enormous scale.

That means high revenue per employee does not necessarily mean high profit per employee. Nor does it establish that one workforce is more productive than another. A software company, for example, could have much lower revenue per employee than a fuel trader while earning a higher margin on each dollar of sales.

For a fuller picture, compare revenue per employee with gross profit per employee, operating profit per employee, cash generation, and the amount of capital required to run the business. Vitol’s striking ratio and Cencora’s multibillion-dollar-per-thousand-employee scale both reveal something real about their business models—but neither number, on its own, measures how much value each employee creates.
